Where energy-efficiency grants for hotels come from

Energy-efficiency grants for hotels do not come from a single place. There are three levels worth watching: European funds, national programmes and regional or local calls. Each has its own deadlines, requirements and fine print.

European level: NextGenerationEU

In Spain, NextGenerationEU funds channel much of the financing for renovation and energy efficiency through the Recovery Plan. You do not apply to Brussels: they reach hoteliers through national or regional programmes that use those funds.

National level: IDAE and tax deductions

• IDAE (the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving) runs grant programmes for efficiency and renewables, many of them funded with European money.
• There are personal income tax deductions and tax benefits linked to energy-efficiency improvement works, with certification requirements before and after the works.
• Calls are published in the BOE (the official state gazette) and on the IDAE website, with specific deadlines and budgets.

Regional and local level

Autonomous communities launch their own lines (often co-funded with European money) for tourism SMEs: energy audits, HVAC renewal, lighting or renewables. Windows are usually short and first-come, first-served, so it pays to subscribe to your region's energy agency bulletin.

How to arrive with real options

Almost every call asks for the same thing: a prior audit or diagnosis and an estimate of expected savings. That is exactly the work worth doing before the window opens: baseline, prioritised measures and estimated payback. With that on the table, applying stops being a race against the clock.
